Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Houston, TX
Common questions from homeowners in Houston and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often does a dryer vent in Houston actually need to be cleared?
Once a year covers most households here. Push it to every six or eight months if you run more than five loads a week, if you have a big dog, or if the laundry sits in the garage and the vent run crosses the attic. Gulf moisture works against you: morning humidity commonly above 85 percent means the lint inside the duct stays damp and packs down instead of drifting out. Damp lint builds a crust on the duct wall, and that crust is what eventually closes the pipe.

Which symptoms point to a clogged duct?
Clothes coming out warm but still wet after a full cycle is the first one most people notice. Then the laundry room or garage gets hot and heavy while the dryer runs, the machine top feels hot to the hand, and you start smelling something scorched. Go outside and check the hood while the dryer is on. If the flap barely moves and you feel almost no air, the run is restricted somewhere between the machine and that hood.

Walk me through the job from the time you arrive.
We pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition hose, and look at the whole run before anything else happens. Then a rotating brush on a flexible rod goes through the duct, driven from the direction that works best for your layout, with a vacuum capturing what comes loose. We clear the exterior hood and free the damper flap, which is usually caked shut on older Houston houses. The dryer goes back on, we measure airflow at the hood, reconnect, and show you the debris we pulled.

How long will I need to be home?
Plan on about an hour for a typical single-story brick ranch with a short wall run out the back of the garage. Two-story subdivision homes and the newer three-story infill builds on older interior lots take longer, because the duct climbs and bends before it reaches a roof or sidewall hood. Heavy compacted lint or a nest adds time. We tell you at the truck if we expect to run long, before we start.

What makes one cleaning cost more than another?
Length and shape of the run drive it. A straight shot through a garage wall is the simple end; a two-story subdivision duct with three or four elbows ending at a roof hood is the other end, and roof access alone changes the work. Crushed flex behind the machine, a damper rusted shut, or a nest that has to be removed and the hood rebuilt all add labor. We look first, quote second, and nothing gets touched until you agree to the number.

How do I know the problem is the duct and not the machine?
Disconnect the duct at the back of the dryer and run a short cycle with the hot air dumping into the room. If drying suddenly works normally, the duct is your problem. If the clothes still come out damp, or the drum turns with no heat at all, the fault is in the appliance, the igniter, thermal fuse, heating element, or control board. We clean and repair vents, not dryers, and we will tell you plainly when a cleaning is not going to fix what you are seeing.

Rigid metal duct versus flexible. How much difference does it make?
A lot. Rigid smooth-wall metal has an interior that lint slides along; ribbed flex and foil accordion hose catch lint at every ridge and hold it. Flex also sags and kinks behind the dryer, which is the most common restriction we find in Houston garages where the machine got shoved back against the wall. Foil and vinyl hose should come out entirely. We replace it with rigid metal, keep the transition piece short, and use only the clamps and seals the code allows.

Birds or rodents got into my vent. Is that something you deal with?
Yes, that is a regular call here, especially on sidewall hoods with a broken or missing flap. Starlings and sparrows build in the first foot or two of duct, and roof rats work their way in on two-story runs. We take the nest and the material out through the hood, clear the duct behind it, and install a proper hood with a working damper and a pest guard that still lets lint pass. If there is a live animal in there, we are not going to pull it out with a brush. That part goes to wildlife removal first.

My duct run is too long. Can it be rerouted or helped with a booster fan?
Often yes. On slab-on-grade houses there is no basement anywhere in this metro, so the run has to go through a wall, up into the attic, or across the garage ceiling, and some builders took the long way. Sometimes we find a shorter path through a nearby exterior wall and the reroute ends the problem permanently. When the geometry will not allow that, an inline booster fan with a pressure switch is the alternative. We measure the actual run and the elbow count before recommending either one.

Can you come out today, and where do you work?
Same-day slots are usually open, more so in the morning. We cover Houston and Harris County, including the older bungalow blocks inside the Loop from the 1920s through the 40s, the postwar single-story brick ranch tracts, the two-story subdivisions farther out, and the surrounding ring of incorporated and unincorporated communities. Garage and utility-room laundry is the norm here, so our trucks are set up for those layouts and for roof hoods. Tell us your cross streets and we will give you an arrival window on the phone.
